Assistant Dean for the First Year Experience and Student Success

Department: Provost and Dean's Office
Location: Chestertown, MD

Washington College is seeking qualified applicants for the Assistant Dean for the First Year Experience and Student Success. This position requires skills in student advising, demonstrated results in improving student retention and evidence of success in dealing with students who are struggling academically or in crisis. This position reports to the Provost and Dean of the College.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage the first year advising program: Recruit, train and supervise faculty to advise first year students, assign advisors, collaborate with faculty director of the First Year Writing Program on related programming. Produce monthly newsletter for first year parents.
  • Chair the Retention Working Group: Monitor retention of first- and second-year students; gather and review retention data; develop, implement and follow up on programs to improve retention.
  • Organize Summer Advising for new students: Develop programming; recruit, train and supervise faculty serving as summer advisors; publicize program to new students and provide resources (eg, web site) to help them prepare; oversee event logistics.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs on New Student Orientation: Help with program/event development, involve first year advisors and select first year reading.
  • Oversee the CARE program, with assistance from case manager, to support students facing any difficulties that impede their progress and success, and the Academic Recovery Program for students on academic probation. 
  • Assist students facing other difficulties including physical or mental health challenges; supervise student leaves of absence and withdrawals from the College, reinstatements and requests for exceptions to academic policies.
  • Supervise all academic resource offices: Writing Center, Office of Academic Skills, Quantitative Skills Center and other tutoring programs, and Disability Services.
  • Serve on the Early Intervention Team and the Behavioral Care Team.
  • Serve on the Committee on Academic Standing and Advising.
  • Supervise Presidential Fellows Program, for high achieving students: Arrange programs and other enrichment events.
  • Assist students with any kind of academic problems or challenges that will affect their academic performance, involve students’ parents as appropriate, respond to parent questions or concerns.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in higher education or in a liberal arts discipline; PhD preferred.
  • Five years’ experience in student success, first year experience or student academic support, preferably in a small, private, liberal arts college setting.
  • Three to five years’ experience in supervision of staff.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks at the same time and to prioritize when necessary; to work independently, to lead a team and to work with faculty, staff and students.
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills, ability to listen and empathize with but also encourage and motivate students.
  • Unfailing discretion in dealing with sensitive information, good working knowledge of FERPA requirements.
