Bird Bander

Location: Chestertown, MD

The Center for Environment & Society at Washington College seeks applications for a Bird Bander to work at the Chester River Field Research Station from March 1st to May 31st †2019. The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting in the operation of the Foremanís Branch Bird Observatory (FBBO). FBBO is a high-volume banding station established in 1998 and operated continuously since. The station is located just outside of Chestertown, Maryland on Washington Collegeís River and Field Campus, a 5,000 acre farm with a variety of habitats including a 200 acre restored grassland, hundreds of forests, fallow fields and walking trails. The farm has 2 miles of shoreline along the Chester River and a 90 acre pond.

We band an average of 101 species each spring and host many visitors including WC students and members of the public. The successful applicant will assist in these banding demonstrations and other duties, as assigned by the staff. See the field station website www.washcoll.edu/crfrs for more information. Position requirements:

  • Must be proficient in the extraction of birds from mist nets and traps.

  • Must have extracted at least 1,000 birds from mist nets.

  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.

Preferred Skills:

  • Applicant can identify, age and sex all commonly occurring passerines found in the eastern United States.

  • Applicant has North American Banding Council certification at the bander level.

  • Applicant has at least one seasonís experience of high volume migration banding.

Compensation:

This is a short term position not eligible for benefits. Pay is $10.50/hour for a 40 hour work week. Assistance in finding housing will be provided.
