Director, Creative Services & Projects

Location: Chestertown, MD

Washington College is seeking qualified applicants for the Director of Creative Services & Projects position. The Director of Creative Services & Projects manages all of WCís graphic design projects, developing creative concepts in collaboration with other departments and executing project managing initiatives from start to finish. This position helps to develop and implement a strategic communication and marketing plan for undergraduate admissions.†

Essential Functions:

  1. Direct, manage and deliver on graphic development for multiple concurrent projects, print and electronic:
    1. developing and executing creative concepts
    2. providing accurate time and cost estimates
    3. schedule and monitor all projects, including those produced externally
    4. work in partnership with web designers, digital media staff, and other departmental colleagues
  2. Advise internal clients on all technical visual recommendations and/or issues:
    1. help facilitate both the input and creative meetings.
    2. talk to clients to develop an artistic approach and style
    3. work with a collaborative/consultative style
  3. Develop the overall look or style of a publication or marketing campaign:
    1. determine how best to represent a concept visually
    2. determine which photographs, art, or other design elements to use
  4. Create and implement a comprehensive marketing communications plan for the office of Enrollment Management.


  1. Supervise design staff:
    1. review and approve designs, artwork, photography, and graphics developed by other staff members
    2. ensure external partners (printers, freelancers, etc.) meet designated deadlines and budgets
  2. Benchmark†industry standards and make recommendations about the necessary technology to stay ahead of trends.
  3. Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelorís degree required in related discipline such as Graphic Design
  • Minimum of 5-7 years graphic design experience
  • Previous supervisory experience managing professional and student staff is preferred
  • Experience†with production of a variety of media particularly print publications. Demonstrated complete understanding of:
    • Color theory and color relationships
    • Typographic terms that identify type forms and the specifications required to refer to typographic settings
    • Perspective and space relationships
    • Page composition and grid structures
    • Print production process, knowledge of production techniques, and correct packaging procedures
    • Photography and the photographic process
  • Proficiency with ADOBE creative suite; experience using Basecamp preferred.
  • Strong communication†skills are required; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills in a diverse environment are essential
  • Should possess strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to organize time, projects and resources effectively
  • Ability to work independently, creatively and resourcefully
  • Must possess outstanding demonstrated customer service experience that incorporates a global perspective along with a commitment to diversity
