Painter

Department: Buildings and Grounds
Location: Chestertown, MD

Washington College is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Painter. Under the supervision of the Lead Painter, this position maintains and performs preventive maintenance painting on the interior and exterior of buildings throughout campus.

Essential Functions:

  1. Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, caulking, spackle or other fillers.
  2. Smoothes surfaces using sandpaper or steelwool. Removes old paint from surfaces using paint remover, scraper, wirebrush or heat gun to prepare surfaces for painting.
  3. Applies paint, varnish, stains or sealers, using brushes, rollers or spray equipment.
  4. Use protective covering (dropcloth/plastic) to protect college furnishings, equipment and personnel.
  5. Erects scaffolding or ladders to perform tasks above ground level. Maintain a clean and safe working environment at all times.
  6. Reports unsafe conditions of buildings or equipment to supervisors. Installs glass in windows and doors as needed. Performs preventive maintenance duties on painting equipment.
  7. Willing and able to assist during inclement weather.
  8. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education:

High School diploma required. Must be willing and able to continually update knowledge of trade through appropriate courses and seminars.

Experience and Background:

1-3 years' painting experience required. Good oral and written skills required.

Working Conditions/Hazards:

  1. May be required to work in confined areas, which may involve extended periods of stooping, standing, bending or kneeling.
  2. Required to do heavy lifting of equipment and materials.
  3. Must be willing and able to work from ladders, scaffolds, roofs and multi structured buildings.
  4. Must be able to perform in hot, dusty, noisy and sometimes hazardous conditions (flammable materials).
  5. Must be willing and able to work inside all buildings or outdoors in all seasons.
  6. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license to drive Washington College vehicles.
